Synopsis...
Charlie Wilson was a bach ... more
Charlie Wilson was a bachelor congressman from Texas who had a habit of showing up in hot tubs with strippers and cocaine. His "Good Time Charlie" exterior, however, masked an extraordinary mind, a deep sense of patriotism and a passion for the underdog, and in the early 1980s the underdog was Afghanistan-which had just been brutally invaded by the Russians. Charlie's longtime friend and patron and sometime lover was Joanne Herring, one of the wealthiest women in Texas and a virulent anti-communist. Believing the American response to the Russian invasion was anemic at best, she prods Charlie into doing more for the Mujahideen (Afghan freedom fighters). Charlie's partner in this uphill endeavor is CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos, a blue-collar operative in a company of Ivy League blue bloods. Together, the three of them-Charlie, Joanne and Gust-travel the world to form unlikely alliances among the Pakistanis, Israelis, Egyptians, arms dealers, law makers and a belly dancer.Their success was remarkable. Funding for covert operations against the Soviets went from $5 million to $1 billion annually. The Red Army retreated out of Afghanistan. When asked how a group of peasants was able to deliver such a decisive blow to the army of a superpower, Pakistani President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq responded simply, "Charlie did it."    hide

Very entertaining movie. Hollywood doing what Hollywood should be doing - entertaining. Good plot flow and acting from Hanks and Hoffman. Roberts seemed alittle stiff and was maybe miscast. Where is the real Charlie Wilson now? Highly recommended for adults.

This movie, quite frankly, is this essenence of entertainment. Based on a true story of relevant, significant, importance, Charlie Wilson's story should be known by all, regardless of the film representation. The film representation is superb. From the moment Charlie Wilson appears in this movie, you know it is special. Tom Hanks plays the indominable Charlie Wilson, bumbling along as a institutionaliz ed, do-nothing Congressman, more concerned with hiring boobs and insuring re-election than any of his constituent's issues and concerns.
Reality smacks cocooned Charlie quite hard when the the Afghan plight is placed front and center for his review. Congressman Wilson's inadvertent position of power and influence, his penchant for whimsically ordering things done, and specifically his power do redirect black funds within Congresses budget without scrutiny resulted in the largest covert war in history. The CIA war support was a success.
The rest is...

Philip Seymour Hoffman is superb and unfaltering as the rogue CIA spook that greases the side car wheels. I predict a nod for supporting actor.
See this movie. It is educational laugh out-loud fare that will keep you wanting more. Everyone in the theatre knows the resulting mess derived form this affair in Afganistan, but keep in mind while demonizing the Taliban enablers - the Cold War effectively ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall. The wall fell nine months after the Afgan victory.
Charl ie did it? Indeed he did.
